Under the Hood: The Mechanics of the Human Machine

Part 4B: Is it Time to Reset "Your CO Sensor?"

The Thalamus & Limbic System (cont'd)

In Part 4A of this blog series, we talked about the connection between our sense of smell and memories, and we learned that scent is the most powerful memory trigger. The thalamus is likened to the hard drive in a car computer because it holds the "software" for our brains, ie- it was programmed by our Creator with a knowledge of the truth as well as how to process sensory input.  The thalamus works together with the amygdala as a storage device for our memories and emotions, also called the “limbic system.” In fact, although the thalamus and amygdala are a part of the brain, they actually file and store our memories and emotions THROUGHOUT our bodies. Yes, you read it correctly: our memories and emotions are NOT only stored in our brains, but in the organs and tissues of our bodies as well! And even more incredible is the fact that these memories and emotions can be re-accessed through our sense of smell! This is why essential oils are so effective for healing on every level. These lovely plant essences are not just for our sensory pleasure and enjoyment; they are also utilitarian in that they “unlock” emotions and memories so that we can work through them and find emotional AND physical healing!!!

Many times physical illness is actually rooted in emotional health, and once the emotions are healed, then we can experience physical healing as well. Toxic emotions are like exhaust or carbon monoxide flooding the inside of our car due to a faulty exhaust system.  The CO sensor would then trigger an indicator on our dashboard to alert us to this danger.  In His mercy and wisdom, G-d prescribed specific oils and spices to be used in the holy incense and the holy anointing oil in the Tabernacle, and these plant-based essences contain components that provide support for the entire person: physical, mental, spiritual, and emotional. These scents assisted the worshiper to draw near to G-d, making each person open and teachable, ready to deal with spiritual and emotional matters that separated him or her from G-d and others in order to bring restoration and healing.  Essential oils are able to provide a “factory reset” of our emotions, much like resetting the CO sensor on a car.

The following chart is a summary of the properties of the biblical essences used in the Tabernacle.  This information is a summary from Healing Oils of the Bible, by Dr. David Stewart. (1) I highly recommend this fascinating book to anyone who wants to learn more about the intelligence infused into essential oils by the Creator!!

Incidentally, learning is also closely linked to our sense of smell, as well as to taste. If you diffuse an essential oil that increases concentration and memory, or if you eat a certain food while studying for a test, the memorized material can be more easily accessed if you smell the same scent or eat the same food while testing. It is a type of “muscle memory” that is being utilized, all stemming from the “hard drive” of your Human Machine!  In this way, the amygdala is much like the carbon monoxide sensor on a car, which will sense if CO is leaking into the passenger cabin of a car.  In the human body, the CO sensor may be on if you react instinctively to certain situations based on negative past experiences or memories.  Resetting this sensor through the use of essential oils will clear away the "carbon monoxide" from the passenger cabin of your human machine and allow you to breathe freely again!

In addition to smell and taste, the thalamus and limbic system respond to the SPOKEN word. This is why it is so important to express intentions and commitments VERBALLY. Our thalamus submits to OUR own SPOKEN word, not to our private thoughts or to the voice of another person; it is VOICE-ACTIVATED.  I recently learned through Dr. Paul Hegstrom of Life Skills International about the science behind the biblical principle of “renewing your mind” referred to in Romans 12. He works with those stuck in habitual negative behavioral patterns to break free through renewing their minds using the SPOKEN word of G-d, which accesses the limbic system, overriding the amygdala's emotional response with the thalamus, to unlock past traumas and memories for the purpose of healing.(2) This topic is covered in much greater detail in my eBook called "Training the Inclination" from by Back to Biblical Health for Women teaching series.  Imagine the incredible strength of combining the power of spoken word with the power of essential oils! Next time, we will talk more about how the brain can be "re-wired," both spiritually as well as physically.  Contrary to what modern medicine says, brain damage CAN be reversed because our Creator has made a way for the brain to "re-wire" itself.  And this ability can be used to re-train our inclinations or habits to do what we want rather than continuing to think and do what we don't want.
